Penalties have increased for drivers, including learners or P1 drivers, who use mobile phones while they are driving.
Fines for mobile phone offences have increased to 2 penalty units. The maximum penalty has been increased to 10 penalty units for matters heard in open court.
Drivers and passengers who fail to wear a properly adjusted seatbelts while driving will pay higher fines if they are caught.
Drivers are responsible for making sure that any passengers who are under 16 years old are properly restrained while they are in the vehicle. The type of restraint is different and depends on the age of the child. See VicRoads (link below).
The infringement penalty for adults who fail to wear seatbelts is 2 penalty units. Seatbelt fines that relate to children are now 2.25 penalty units.
