As the end of the financial year approaches, Victoria Legal Aid managing director Bevan Warner is encouraging people with financial problems to act early, get on top of their situation and take advantage of Legal Aid’s free legal information services.
“Not surprisingly, one of our most in demand publications at this time is on managing debt,” Mr Warner said.
Victoria Legal Aid’s publication Debt problems: The law, your options is available free of charge to help people experiencing financial difficulty, and may especially be relevant to people who have recently lost their job.
Mr Warner commented on how easy it was for people to feel overwhelmed by legal processes when faced with a financial crisis.
“Being in debt can be a very stressful time, with so many questions around demands for payment, legal notices and letters about what you owe, and visits made by debt collectors.”
“This free publication covers how you can work out what is owed, deciding what to do, and making a plan you can afford,” Mr Warner said. “It helps people to understand the importance of being more in control and of avoiding the traps that can worsen your situation.”
Debt problems can be ordered free of charge or downloaded online .
Victoria Legal Aid also offers a free telephone legal information and referrals service Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 5.15pm.
